Important

Products are not art prints

Neither licence lets you sell the image itself as art. Here’s the difference.

Allowed with Extended

Products for resale

The photo or video frame is one part of something you’ve designed and sell. What the customer is buying is the product. (Packaging and labels for your own goods are already covered by Standard.)

  • A calendar with your dates, layout and branding
  • Greeting cards or postcards with your text or design
  • Mugs, t-shirts, tote bags or phone cases with your design
  • Notebook and journal covers
  • Website, social media or presentation templates
Not included in any licence

Art prints

The photo, or a still frame from a video, reproduced to be sold and displayed as art. That stays true even if you add a border, mat, frame, caption or signature.

  • Prints on paper or fine-art paper
  • Posters sold as decor
  • Canvas, framed, metal or acrylic prints
  • Wall murals, decals and wallpaper
  • Selling the image file for others to print
Rule of thumb: if people are buying it mainly to hang the photo on a wall, it’s an art print. Want to sell prints of an Origin 8 photo? Art-print licences are quoted per image. Get in touch.

Questions

Good to know

Can I buy a licence for a client?

Yes. Put your client’s name as the licensee at checkout, and the licence certificate is issued to them. You, your team and your contractors can work with the file on their behalf.

Can I use one licence on more than one project?

Yes, as long as it’s for the same licensee and stays within the licence limits (for Standard, 500,000 printed copies or viewers in total).

Are boosted or sponsored social posts allowed?

Yes. Paid and boosted social posts, and online ads in general, are covered by the Standard licence.

Can I edit footage or use still frames?

Yes. Trim, colour-grade, crop, speed-ramp, composite or add titles as you like, and still frames from a clip are covered by the same licence. The one rule for video: a clip has to be part of a larger production, so you can’t post or resell it on its own.

Does a YouTube video that goes viral need Extended?

No. Online views are unlimited on Standard, including YouTube and social video. The 500,000 limit applies to printed copies and to TV, cinema and streaming-service audiences.

What if my project goes over 500,000?

Choose Extended, which has no limit. If a Standard project grows later, contact us about upgrading it.

Do I have to credit the photographer?

No, credit isn’t required. If you’d like to add one, use “Origin 8 Studios”.

What about exclusive rights?

All licences sold here are non-exclusive. If you need exclusive use, a buy-out or an art-print licence, contact us for a quote.

Can I get a refund?

Downloads are instant, so sales are final once a file is downloaded. If a file is faulty, or you bought the wrong size or licence and haven’t downloaded it yet, email us within 14 days and we’ll fix it, swap it or refund you.

How do I prove I have a licence?

Every file comes with a licence certificate and a number, and anyone can check that number on our Verify a Licence page.
